2009 Special Olympics NL Summer Games

The 2009 Provincial Summer Games will be the largest in the organizations history playing host to over five hundred athletes, coaches and mission staff who will be competing in the sports of track and field, swimming and five pin bowling. Teams from across the province and Labrador will travel to Mount Pearl from July 9-12 for the opportunity to compete and be part of this monumental moment. These games have added significance because they will be used to select Team Newfoundland and Labrador that will be representing the province at the 2010 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in London, Ontario in July of 2010.

These games will mark the 20th anniversary of both Special Olympics Provincial Summer Games in and the Law Enforcement Torch Run in Newfoundland and Labrador. In july of 1989 the first ever Law Enforcement Torch Run carried the Flame of Hope into an Special Olympics opening ceremony for the first time.

Soccer Team to Compete in Nova Scotia

On July 17th Special Olympics Mount Pearl Soccer Team will travel to Halifax to compete at the 2009 Special Olympics Nova Scotia Provincial Games. This team has been training diligently in preparation for these games and are looking forward for their opportunity to compete.

These Games will be used to qualify the Mount Pearl team to compete as Team NL at the 2010 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in London, Ontario.

2009 Canada Games

The 2009 Canada Games, is a national multi-sport and cultural event being held August 15-29, 2009 in the Province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Since 1967, the Canada Games has evolved to become the pinnacle of national competition for Canadian athletes and includes divisions for persons with disabilities and an arts component called the National Artist Program.

The 2009 Games are being organized and staged by the Prince Edward Island 2009 Canada Games Host Society, an incorporated not-for-profit organization, in co-operation with the national body, the Canada Games Council.

While Prince Edward Island may be Canadaandrsquo;s smallest province, Islanders are no strangers to hosting large-scale regional, national and international sporting events and are famous for their warm hospitality.

Since 2001 the Canada Games have included athletes with an intellectuyal dissability in a Special Olympics division. andnbsp;At this years games there will be Special Olympics divisions in the sports of Athletics and Swimming.

Whether you are a participant, fan or volunteer, we invite you to come play with us in 2009, for a uniquely P.E.I. Canada Games.

Team NL Training Camp

On the weekend of September 11th Team NL will be gathering in St.John`s to participate in their first training camp in preparation for the 2010 Special Olympics National Summer Games that will take place next July in London, Ontario. Sports that will be represented at the camp will be athletics, bowling, powerlifting, soccer and swimming.

This camp will bring together athletes, coaches, mission staff and community coaches for a weekend of training, planning, team building and goal setting. The camp will be used to evaluate the athletes current level of fitness and sport development and to set them up with a training program for the remainder of the year.

Following the training camp athletes will return home where they will continue to train the remainder of the year. Sports will have a second training camp later in the year where they will follow-up on what they learned at the September Camp.

Tri-Con Club Registration

The 2009-10 Registration for the Tri-Con Special Olympics Club will take place on Tuesday, September 15th, at the Loyal Orange Lodge (L.O.L.) in Tilton from 7-9 p.m. A social including music and snacks will be part of the registration night.

Special Olympics St. John`s Registration Night

Registration for the 2009-10 Special Olympics St.John`s program year will be taking placeandnbsp;Wednesday, September 16th. from 6:30 to 8 pm at the Perlin Training Center, Penneywell Road across from Plaza Bowl.

Annual General Meeting Notice

The Annual General Meeting of Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador will be hosted 11am on Sunday, October 18th in St.John's at the Marine Institute.

At the meeting the board will:

  • review the work of the Board.
  • review the financial statements and auditorandrsquo;s report.
  • appoint an auditor.
  • elect directors to the Board.
  • consider resolutions brought forward by Members or Directors.

Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Championships

The Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Championships will be held this year in Happy Valley Goose Bay. The competition is set for weekend of March 12-14th. 63 Athletes, Coaches and staff will compete in Snowshoeing and Cross Country Skiing.

Bi-Annual Regional Leadership Council Meeting

The Bi-Annual Regional Leadership Council meeting will be held on April 17-18 at Sinbad Hotel in Gander. Two delegates from each club are encouraged to attend.

Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador Floor Hockey Championships

The Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador Floor Hockey Championships will be hosted in Clarenvile on Saturday May 8th.
