Day 2 - Opening Ceremonies

Team NL started day 2 all teams having a practise session where they learned  got to use thier venues.  Then they got dressed and ready for Opening Ceremonies

TeamNL was part of a sea of coloured T-shirts and smiles as 1,400 athletes paraded into TD Waterhouse Stadium Tuesday night to mark the opening of the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games.

The athletes, their families and coaches have travelled to London from all over the country to compete in eight sports at venues throughout the city.

London Police Chief Murray Faulkner, one of the Games three chairpersons, gave a pep talk to the athletes and told them to make sure they savour their experience in London and Enjoy the games. Enjoy the city. You are all winners in my heart he said.

The athletes also enjoyed a celebrity surprise when Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster Don Cherry, along with NHL stars Corey Perry, Brandon Prust and Danny Syvret, emerged from an RCMP helicopter and presented the Games flag.

The Special Olympics have touched the lives of those with intellectual disabilities for the last 41 years. The concept originated in London when University of Western Ontario alumnus Frank Hayden came up with the idea nearly 50 years ago.

Hayden attended Tuesday's ceremonies and sat in the front row with the athletes.

Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best welcomed the athletes to London and thanked the 800 volunteers who have given their time to make the Games a success.

You are all champions in the eyes of London she told the athletes.
